BELLEVILLE – Five Moira Secondary School students are walking away with new personal cameras on Tuesday after winning the third annual Iron Accountant Loyalist competition held at the college.

About 40 students from eight Quinte-area high schools participated in the competition for a new GoPro camera and bragging rights.

The all-day event centres around a company called Mike’s Bikes. Each group has to make business decisions for the mock company. It is divided into six separate rounds.

Professor Karen Baker, a Loyalist accounting faculty member, is one of the organizers of the event.

“The objective is to have the highest return on shareholders investments,” she said.

A computer algorithm judges the scores, determining the winner of each round.

Quinte Christian High School won the competition the first two years, she said. They led today’s competition after three rounds, but Moira Secondary School eventually pulled ahead for the win. The Christian school finished second, with Centennial Secondary School rounding out the top three.

Besides the cameras, each winning student also received a tuition credit towards a Loyalist program. The second-place prize is a $25 Cineplex gift card, with the third-place team receiving a book on personal finance.

A third-year accounting student joined each group to mentor the students.

“It’s a good opportunity for these students to pass on what they’ve learned to the high-school students,” Baker said.
