Quinte West pool enclosure bylaw defeated

  • September 22, 2015 at 12:14 pm

By Jaykob Storey

BELLEVILLE – Quinte West city council voted against a proposed swimming pool enclosure bylaw Monday night.

If it had passed, the bylaw would require any newly constructed, privately owned swimming pool with a depth greater than 0.6 metres to be surrounded by a fence no lower than 1.2 metres. The last time a similar bylaw was discussed was in February 2011. It was defeated. History would repeat itself Monday night when the council opposed the bylaw, eight to two. Councillors Karen Sharpe and Bob Wannamaker were the sole members in favour of the motion, while the rest of the council agreed that it was either unnecessary or too fragmented and vague to be effective.
