BELLEVILLE – Belleville police responded to a shoplifting complaint at a north end department store on Monday.

Police arrived on scene to discover the store’s security guard and the male suspect had been involved in a physical altercation.

Once the suspect was in custody, police officers found he was in possession of a controlled substance.

The 53-year-old man from Sutton, Ont. was charged with theft under $5,000, resisting arrest, uttering threats, breach of probation and possession.

A scheduled court appearance is set for December.
