Free parking in downtown Belleville comes to an end

Free Belleville parking

By Taylor Broderick

BELLEVILLE – Belleville city council has voted to get rid of the free parking in the lot across from city hall on Front Street in the downtown area.

In May, free parking spaces available on the street were taken away during phase 1 of the downtown reconstruction. To make up for the lost spaces, the city offered free parking for up to four hours in the riverside lot.

Coun. Mitch Panciuk says since construction of phase 1 has finished, council agreed there is no need for parking to still be free in that lot.

The free parking may come back later in the year, he said.

“I expect that we will be asked for free parking spaces during the phase 2 construction,” Panciuk said.

You can still find parking for no charge in downtown – at least for an hour:

Phase 2 of the downtown reconstruction is scheduled to start this summer.
