Poverty Roundtable hopes to start discussion
BELLEVILLE– A project dealing with poverty that has been going on since 2013 may start leaving bigger footprints.
“We’re about to launch a very exciting project with putting people (who have) lived in poverty in leadership roles,” said partnership developer Joanna Lewis.
The idea is an initiative of the Poverty Round-Table.
It held a meeting last week Wednesday, and is now starting to get ready to host events.
The committee meets four to six times a year and is made up of 140 members. They include community members that have been living in poverty for years. Members also come from other agencies representing businesses, children’s services and education, among others.
Other initiatives include events like a Speakers Bureau. The round table will have people with lived-in experience speaking about dealing with poverty in the community. The initiative hopes to speak to key opinion leaders in the Quinte community to find out how they can work together on issues of poverty. It hopes to collect the stories of people living in poverty. The organization also wants to engage in public education to reduce stigma and engage non-traditional players in poverty reduction.
Attendance is free to anyone interested. The next poverty roundtable meeting is March 30.
