Trenton arena looking to keep the ice cold

BELLEVILLE – The Duncan MacDonald Memorial arena in Trenton wants to keep the ice business running during the summer.

Staff of Quinte West have proposed to council a $175,000 one-time capital expenditure for the project.

Bob Forder, manager of buildings and facilities for Quinte West, says the proposal has been presented but no decision has been made yet.

“We are looking into the possibility of keeping summer ice in. It may be this year, it may be next year or it may not (happen) at all,” he said.

Local teams such as the Trenton Golden Hawks have already expressed an interest in using the ice time for practice during the summer months, Forder said.

The ice would also be available for hockey development camps, casual leagues and figure skating organizations. It might also be available to the public.

“There is a desire from council to try and allocate some time for public skating,” Forder said.

It is something the Quinte West staff will look into to see if it can turn a profit for the city, he added.

The final decision on the proposal will be made March 2.
