BELLEVILLE – Quinte West OPP are focusing their efforts on reducing domestic violence in the region.
Data from the past three years show an increase in domestic violence in the month of March, the detachment said in a news release Wednesday. The majority of incidents reported to police take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 4 and 6 p.m.
Officers will focus on educating the public about the dangers of domestic violence and its impact on victims. They will also be stepping up their enforcement of the laws.
The OPP provided tips on how the public can help stop domestic violence. They are:
- Know the signs.
- Get educated about domestic violence.
- Listen to the victim. Let them know you believe them and be a support system.
- Do a random act of kindness for the victim. Every small act or gesture will provide the victim with some relief and help increase their self-esteem.
- Check in regularly. Letting the person know you are watching out for them will give them a sense of security.
- Document the incidents. Documenting will lend credibility if and when the victim does want to take legal action.
- Make the call. Call the police and let them know what is going on.
