Winners of Loyalist athletic awards under wraps until Wednesday

  • March 14, 2016 at 2:45 pm

By Emma Persaud

BELLEVILLE – The Loyalist Lancer Athletic Banquet is this Wednesday, and no one knows who will win an award.

The names of the winners are being kept secret until they are announced that evening. The night starts with a dinner at 6 p.m. in the Loyalist College gym, and then the awards will be revealed.

The only people who know who the recipients will be are the members of the committee that chose them.

“It keeps things as a surprise. It builds excitement,” says Jim Buck, the athletic director for the Lancer teams.

The most anticipated awards, Buck says, are the male and female athletes of the year. And it’s not easy to pick them. The committee has been meeting since January to plan the banquet and to make sure the right person is chosen for each award.

“We have two or three meetings just to decide who will win what. We space them out so we have time to think and recognize what everyone is contributing,” he said. “There are a lot of really good kids who won’t get one.”

QNet News will be at the event to reveal the winners.

Stay tuned.
