Northumberland traffic safety week successful

By Justin Medve

NORTHUMBERLAND – Northumberland OPP laid more than 200 charges last week during a traffic safety campaign.

The campaign focused on distracted and impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt use. These issues are known as the “big four” causes of collision, according to a press release by Const. Steve Bates.

The charges included 168 for speeding, 47 for moving violations, 11 regarding insurance, nine for distracted driving, seven seatbelt-related and two for impaired operation.

The news was not all grim however.

“The majority of the motoring public were found to be operating in a safe manner consistent with the rules of the road and we thank them for their efforts in making Ontario roadways among some of the safest in North America,” said Sgt. Dave Davidson is the same news release.
