CFB Trenton officially opens hangar 6
TRENTON – Military members, public figures and media gathered Wednesday afternoon for the officially ribbon cutting at Canadian Forces Base Trenton.
After exactly four years of construction and a total of $92 million dollars spent, the new facility is open and ready for use.
“This project was not only good for the Canadian armed forces, good for the people of Canada as a whole, but it was also good for the local community. It created jobs, created opportunity, it allowed people to think wow, if we can do this, if we can do this, we can do anything,” said Karen McCrimmon, the parliamentary secretary to the federal Minster of Veterans Affairs.
Hangar 6 will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with a modern-day facility to work and train in regardless of the weather.
The final building is the size of three CFL football fields covering approximately 4 acres of land in total.
“Proper infrastructure is essential to maintain our high-value aircraft and to ensure that it is operational at all times. The women and men of 8 Wing Trenton will continue to carry out their important missions and to respond to daily challenges well into the future out of hangar 6,” said Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, in a news release.
Officials say the new hangar is necessary in order to provide workers with a safe and comfortable place to work. It will also allow for planes to be stored and receive maintenance regardless of the weather.
By building a facility that can be used regardless of the weather, it will ensure maximum productivity for CFB Trenton.
“We are invested in our military. We are investing not only in the human capital, but investing in the capital of planes and buildings. As you watch it roll out there will be more investment announcements. We are in the middle of defence review and when you look at the military and the state of peace keeping that we’re going into it is very important that we give them the proper resources,” said Neil Ellis, MP for Bay of Quinte.
