Flooding Moira River closes trails in Belleville

BELLEVILLE – Two riverfront trails remain closed off by the city of Belleville due to flooding caused by rising water levels in the Moira River.

The northern sections of both the Lions Park and Riverfront Trail have been shut down for the time being.

Quinte Conservation warned over the weekend that due to snow melting and substantial rain in the forecast, water levels would be rising in the river and there was a risk of flooding. In a statement released by Quinte Conservation, Water Resources manager Christine McClure stated “Flows are still elevated from recent snow melt and have been sustained from earlier rain events. Residents can expect water levels similar to a typical spring runoff.”

McClure also warned of properties being potentially affected. “This means properties that usually get wet in the spring will already be wet, or can expect water to encroach onto their lawns. Some buildings in very low lying areas may be affected.”

Quinte Conservation has not yet released a statement regarding the effects of yesterdays rain on the water levels.

Area residents are being warned by Quinte Conservation to stay away from riverbanks and dams due to strong currents.
