Mitchell Sideroad closed following accident

  • December 2, 2011 at 2:02 pm

By Andrew Mendler

A near miss with a VIA train has caused the City of Belleville to close down Mitchell side road as of last Thursday.

The city was told by Transport Canada to close the road after a fuel truck got stuck on the railway tracks and was almost hit by a VIA train.

Director of Operations Brad Wilson said that the city plans to place two stops signs on either side of Airport Road, forcing northbound traffic to stop. This would give traffic on Mitchell Road the right-of-way and eliminate any vehicle from getting stuck on the tracks.

Wilson said only local traffic will be able to use the road but expects the intersection to be fully operational in the coming weeks.
