Lancers soccer team ends winless streak

BELLEVILLE – The Loyalist Lancers women’s soccer team played back-to-back games on the weekend and ended a five-game winless streak.

The team played two away games, winning on Saturday against the Sault College Cougars and tying the Cambrian Golden Shield.

Heading into Saturday’s game, the team had lost four games and tied one.

Second-year student Ella Bannon scored the opening goal off a corner kick eight minutes into the game, according to a game report from the team’s website. The momentum allowed the Lancers to take quick control of the game in the first half, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes from forwards Bannon, Ashley MacDonald and striker Amy Vieira.

Sault College’s midfielder Taryn Gazankas scored a goal late in the first half from a handball penalty kick.

Gazankas would score another goal, making it a one-goal game late in the second half.

MacDonald of the Lancers secured the win with a late-game goal, earning the team a 4-2 victory and its first win of the season.

The Lancers’ second game was a tie on Sunday against the Golden Shield.

Bannon got things going quickly, scoring the first goal of the game for the Lancers three minutes into the game. The Lancers held on to that 1-0 lead into the second half of the game.

Cambrian had the opportunity to tie the game with a penalty kick 80 minutes into the second half, but it went off the crossbar.

It wasn’t until the final seconds of the game that Cambrian scored a goal off a header from a penalty kick from midfielder Dana Isaia to tie the game.

The Lancers have two games remaining this season. The first is this Thursday at home against the Seneca Sting. The game starts at 6 p.m.

The final game is at home against the Durham Lords next Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
