Typhoon Haiyan has local residents opening their wallets

BELLEVILLE – Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines are getting some assistance with the help of Belleville residents.

The Belleville Red Cross has raised nearly $10,000 in response to the typhoon late last week that left millions of people in need of food, water and shelter.

The Canadian government is matching donations to the Red Cross.

Jennifer Bryant, community services assistant at the Belleville Red Cross, says she’s excited about the response.

“I have noticed there has been an increase in foot traffic through the door, so in terms of individuals coming it has definitely increased,” said Bryant.

The community usually comes out for international disasters, she said, and this time is no different.

“In the past when we’ve had large-scale appeals we’ve always had a good response from the community. As much as people are willing to donate we’re willing to accept.”
