Hockey for Troops aims to raise $40,000 for soldiers and families

BELLEVILLE – Hockey for Troops hope to raise even more money for military members and their families at the fourth annual CFB Trenton Pond Hockey Classic tournament.
The tournament will take place in Batawa, next to the old Bata Shoe Factory north of Trenton, kicking off with the “Puck Drop” dinner on Jan. 23 in the hopes of raising $40,000, an increase of $10,000 over last year.
The 32-team pond hockey tournament will occur on Jan. 24 and 25.
Soldiers from the 436 Squadron, of CFB Trenton, are hosting the tournament and dinner along with corporate sponsorship from Scotiabank and Scotia McLeod.
The tournament has raised more than $80,000 over the first three years. Funds raised in 2015 will support the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation and Soldier On, a program to help homeless veterans.
Hockey for Troops says the purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the sacrifice soldiers and their families make on a daily basis, according to its website.
“This event will help support the military members and their families deeply affected by loss of life and other unforeseen circumstances resulting from their service,” it says on the website.
