Death toll from lack of seatbelts is up this year

  • September 22, 2015 at 11:06 am

By Rebecca Bartlett

BELLEVILLE – It’s only September, and the number of deaths across Ontario caused by people not wearing seatbelts is already above the total for all of  last year.

In 2014, there were 34 deaths across the province as a result of not wearing a seatbelt, and so far this year there have been 42 people killed, according to a news release issued by the OPP Tuesday.

From Sept. 7 to 13 there were seven people killed in car accidents in Ontario, the OPP said. Six of those seven people were not wearing a seatbelt.

If you are 16 or older you have to use a seatbelt. A person who is younger than 16 has to be properly buckled into a car seat, booster seat or seatbelt. You can find information about seatbelt regulations in Ontario here.

You could be fined $240 and receive two demerit points for not wearing a seatbelt.

QNet News has contacted local OPP to get numbers for the Quinte region, and we are waiting to hear back.

More to come.
