Trenton waste-water treatment plant upgrades to begin
BELLEVILLE – The Trenton waste-water treatment plant is getting its first phase of upgrades.
The original $71-million project has been broken down into three phases due to construction time and funding, with Phase 1 costing $24.6 million.
Phase 1 will consist of a new administration wing, as the existing one will be used to house new equipment made by a company called Headworks for screening and treating waste water.
There is a pre-construction meeting next week, and Peak Engineering and Construction of Brighton will begin work on Phase 1 within two to three weeks, according to Chris Angelo, the director of public works and environmental services for Quinte West.
Angelo says Phase 1 will improve office amenities for staff, as well as refurbish old and outdated equipment. These upgrades are being funded through the waste-water rate structure for Quinte West, as well as a $3.75-million grant from the federal and provincial governments.
Angelo says timing and funding for Phases 2 and 3 will be dependent on grants.
Even though these phases won’t take place for at least a few years, Angelo says they are still very important, and hold many benefits for the city, consumers and improving environmental impact.
Phase 1 is expected to be completed in early 2018.
