Attempted fraud reported in Bancroft

  • February 3, 2016 at 3:05 pm

By Jaykob Storey

BELLEVILLE — Bancroft residents are reporting incidents of fraudulent phone calls reporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

The callers claim that the victim owes an outstanding tax debt and instruct them to pay immediately or risk legal action. The callers then ask the receiver to purchase a pre-paid credit card and send them the information in order to pay the debt.

The Canada Revenue Agency has said that these kinds of requests would never come from them. If anyone claims to be associated with them and requests payment through a pre-paid credit card, immediate payment over the phone or personal information, this is likely an attempt at fraud.

As of yet, there are no reports of anyone in the area giving these callers any money or information.

The OPP recommends that anyone who has been a victim of phone calls like this, call them immediately.
