Volunteer firefighters in Quinte West get a new contract

  • March 10, 2016 at 10:10 am

By Rebecca Bartlett

BELLEVILLE – Quinte West council has approved a new three-year contract for the city’s 124 volunteer firefighters.

The contract gives senior firefighters a 2.5-per-cent increase in the $3,700 honorarium they are paid each year.

As well, the contract provides for a$250,000 insurance payment to the family of any firefighter killed on duty. The cost of the policy will be shared between the volunteer firefighters and the city.

Other changes include short-term and crisis counselling for volunteer firefighters and their families, additional money for training, and creating a recognition program to honour firefighters who have served for a long time.
