Hospice in Quinte West up for discussion

  • March 21, 2016 at 2:43 pm

By Matthew Murray

BELLEVILLE – Quinte West city council will discuss the possibility of building a hospice for the Quinte West region at its meeting Monday night.

Hospices provide palliative (end-of-life) care to patients, often in hospital or homelike conditions.

While there are several local hospices in Belleville, Picton, Warkworth and Madoc, there are no hospices in Quinte West.

City council will talk about establishing a committee that would look into the idea of having a hospice and palliative-care centre in Quinte West, according to the agenda for Monday’s meeting. There is a recommendation to councillors that Dr. Sharada Prasad, Mayor Jim Harrison, and councillors Karen Sharpe and Sally Freeman be appointed to the committee if it is created.

Other issues in front of council Monday night include making decisions on support and funding for a film festival, funding for the design of a new fire hall, and approval of donating city-owned land to Habitat for Humanity.

More to come.
