BELLEVILLE – Belleville police charged a 23-year-old local man with aggravated assault and are now looking for witnesses.

At 6:55 a.m. on Sept. 23, police say they were called to a street disturbance on Grier Street and found a man in need of medical attention.

The victim had a head injury and was taken to the Belleville General Hospital for treatment. He had surgery for a broken nose and orbital bone, but he permanently lost the sight in his left eye, according to police.

The accused is also in custody because he is facing charges related to a robbery at a north-end motel on Oct. 5.

The charges include: robbery with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, possession of a prohibited weapon and cocaine possession. His bail hearing is on Oct. 11.
