BELLEVILLE — While a majority of students returned to classes on January 6, for some Loyalist College students it was their first day of school.

Twenty-three programs allow students to begin in January rather than the traditional September start.

Carolyn Pratt, the manager of enrollment services at Loyalist College, said for the students who registered in full-time programs makeup about one-quarter of the student population.

“They make up about 24 percent of the full-time student population,” she said.

That would be 590 full-time registered students in January compared to the 3,555 full-time students registered.

Pratt said the deans decide which programs are available for each school and the spaces available.

“What programs are going to be offered and what intakes will be offered.”

She also said the deans decide whether they’re going to offer it for just fall or the winter or even a spring start.

The difference in starting in January compared to September is you finish in August rather than April.

Some of the programs offered in January are Advertising & Marketing Communications – Creative Design, Biotechnology, Business/Business Administration, Business – Accounting/Business Administration-Accounting, Chemical Engineering Technician/Technology, and Civil Engineering Technician/Technology.
