Markham man charged with selling carfentanyl in Belleville
BELLEVILLE – Belleville police have charged a man with selling carfentanyl in Belleville after an ongoing investigation.
Police say that at the beginning of February they received information about a man from the Toronto area who was selling the opioid, which is 100 times stronger than fentanyl.
As a result of an investigation by the department’s intelligence and street-crime units, assisted by the OPP East Region’s organized-crime bureau, on Tuesday officers arrested a 55-year-old Markham man after stopping his vehicle on the southbound Highway 62 off-ramp from Highway 401 in Belleville.
Officers seized 14 grams of carfentanyl, with a street value of $2,800, digital scales, $200 in Canadian currency, a cellphone and drug paraphernalia, police say.
During the arrest the man resisted the officers, the department said.
The man is charged with possession of fentanyl with the intent to traffick, resisting arrest, obstructing police and possession of items acquired by crime.
He was to appear at a bail hearing at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
