BELLEVILLE – Multiple collisions and cancellations are being reported in the Quinte region today as freezing rain continues.

Early Tuesday morning, the Ontario Provincial Police announced a single-vehicle collision on Foxboro-Stirling Road near Baptist Church Road. They have since reported that the road has been cleared and the vehicle has been removed. Police also say emergency services were called to a collision on Highway 401 eastbound involving two vehicles near County Road 40 in Trenton. The accident was cleared by the OPP shortly after noon, though as of midafternoon they were still warning residents that driving conditions remained slippery on the highway.

Environment Canada issued a warning for freezing rain this morning. The freezing drizzle began about 9 a.m. and lasted to 2 p.m. before becoming light rain and fog, according to the weather service. Periods of drizzle and fog coverage are predicted to continue into Wednesday morning.

Tri-Board Transportation Services announced early this morning that all school buses were cancelled due to the risk of severe weather. While classes in the region were not initially cancelled, the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board both announced later on Twitter that parents were encouraged to pick students up early because of the road conditions.

Schools in Quinte West, Belleville, Hastings & area are calling parents/guardians for early pick up of students. Schools remain open.

A media release from Quinte Health and Wellness Centre says most recreational programs, including fitness, access to the gymnasium, children’s programs and skating have been cancelled due to the weather. The centre itself will remain open during its regular business hours.
