Bazaar supports girls’ empowerment

BELLEVILLE – Who run the world? Girls!
The post-graduate public-relations students at Loyalist College, in partnership with local non-profit organization Girls Inc., are hosting a fundraising bazaar today at the college.
Girls Inc. offers interactive workshops to schools throughout Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, and Hastings and Prince Edward counties. The organization aims to empower girls and inspire them.
“(The workshops) can turn around a synergy amongst girls in a school,” Lindsey Belch, executive director of Girls Inc., said.
Allies in Action is one of the programs. Through various activities it tackles the issue of how girls treat each other. Bullying and exclusion are also targeted.
Self-defence classes are offered as well.
“There are so many challenges that women and young girls face, and there are virtually no programs out there to help them,” Belch said. “I have a daughter. We all have girlfriends and young girls in our lives and we want to see them do well, be happy, and successful.”
Most people browsing the bazaar said they weren’t necessarily there for the cause but rather the sale items, although they were happy to help Girls Inc.
“There’s a great turnout. We have had lots of donations,” Ashley Warner, a public-relations student, said.
The event runs until 7 p.m.
