Canada Day 2011

Many Canadians, it seems, only display their Canada flag on Canada Day. But there are those who fly the flag all-year round. This collection of photos showcases some of those proud Canadians from around the Quinte area.

They include people like Lance Usher who served in the military for 24 years. Rachel Rumbolt’s brother completed two Afghanistan tours. Others such as Brian Markis just like the way the flag looks. .

Nancy Reid noticed on a trip to the United States how patriotic they were and most of the homes flew the American flag. She thought it looked nice.

“We should fly the flag all-year round because we are Canadian,” said Reid.

TRENTON ONT (27/06/2011) Trenton resident Rachel Rumbolt adjusts one of her many Canadian Flags. She flies the flag because she loves Canada. She takes a flag everywhere she goes. She recently flew one at a Nascar race in Michigan. She also supports the Canadian military and counts her family as one of "lucky ones" when her brother returned unharmed after two Afghanistan tours.
TRENTON ONT (27/06/2011) For Lance Usher flying the Canadian flag is important because he served under it for 24 years. Usher is now retired and still supports the military by participating in the 1st Canadian Army Veteran motorcycle group events. One of the events the group takes part in is any repatriation ceremonies. Currently his son is serving in the Canadian military making him 4th generation in the Usher family to serve. Who could be more patriotic? He also hoped that CFB Trenton pilots could see it from the air. He once asked a pilot if he could see it, but the pilot said he was to busy looking for the runway. For Maureen showing off the Canadian flag is also to honour her father who fought in the Second World War. Photo by Linda Horn

The Reids fly a permanent Canadian flag, but the the temporary flags have a lot more meaning. They are put out in honour of Andrea who became a Canadian citizen on Canada day five years ago. Andrea passed away on May 26 2011 from an infection. "She loved seeing her flags out on Canada day," said Nancy Reid. "She thought Canada was the best country on earth," said Karl Reid.
